Songs Of The Summer 2012: Part Nine

With summer in full swing, we asked our Demo contributors, some Canadian musicians and a variety of U of T students what song they hope will represent their four months of sun.  Over the next weeks, we will share what they said.

Song: Did You See the Words

Artist: Animal Collective

Album: Feels

Being a city slicker (Toronto-born and raised), I love discovering hidden urban oases whenever and wherever I can. Biking along the Humber River, reading under shade trees by Lake Ontario, and stargazing in my backyard are an essential part of my summer routine. That being said, I knew I wanted summer 2012 to be the summer of rediscovering nature, and of really appreciating the simple pleasures in life and the beauty of the world around me; I wanted it to be strange, dreamy and organic. These three words work well in describing ‘Did You See the Words’ by Animal Collective, a great feel-good jam that, for me, feels like a day well spent. The beginning is like a sunrise; the world slowly starts to wake up and come alive. Then the song takes off, and takes the listener on a raucous jaunt that feels like an adventure-filled day. As the song winds down, it feels like nightfall, when the sun is setting and the stars are starting to come out; the kind of warm, calm night that only summer can offer.
