News: Tanya Tagaq wins the 2014 Polaris Music Prize

In an exciting twist of events, Tanya Tagaq beat out the likes of Drake and Arcade Fire for the 2014 Polaris Music Prize, as determined by a jury of journalists. The Inuk singer’s album, Animism, features her signature style of solo Inuit throat singing.

Tagaq’s performance at the gala was in front of a screen that rolled the names of missing and murdered Aboriginal women, garnering her the only standing ovation of the night.

In her acceptance speech, Tagaq thanked her producer and her family, and also encouraged people to “eat seal,” a “sustainable resource” for Indigenous cultures.
