New Releases: Your Friend – “Heathering” + “Come Back”

By Stuart Oakes

New singles from the debut album by Kansas musician Taryn Miller aka Your Friend. Her debut album Gumption is out January 29th on Domino Records and she opens for Alex G and Porches tonight at the Horseshoe Tavern.

According to a Domino Records press release, “Musically, Gumption builds on the ideas of Your Friend’s previous EP, Jekyll/Hyde, but recording with producer Nicolas Vernhes (The War on Drugs, Deerhoof) at the Rare Book Room in Brooklyn helped Miller push her penchant for drones, loops and found sounds to a masterful level. Miller says she found inspiration from by listening to avant-garde music by William Basinski, Tim Hecker, the soundtracks of Cliff Martinez and the melodic sensibilities of Grouper and Broadcast. Thematically, the album deals with the growing pains that resulted from taking a hard look at herself post touring.”

Sounds pretty excellent!
