Songs Of The Summer 2012: Part Six

With summer in full swing, we asked our Demo contributors and a variety of U of T students what song they hope will represent their four months of sun.  Over the next weeks, we will share what they said.

Evangeline Fitz, 2nd Year, English

Song: Clean

Artist: Pete Yorn & Scarlett Johansson

Album: Break Up

I hope this summer will be clean. I want rain. I want midnight thunderstorms and tornadoes. I want hurricanes and hailstorms. And after the rain, I hope things will feel lighter. This past spring has dragged with it all the heavy baggage of winter which I hope will finally be rid of come the summer.

The song “Clean” by Pete Yorn and Scarlett Johansson completely evokes this feeling of wanting a new start. The chorus simply says, “Would you talk to me? I want everything to be so clean” in Scarlett’s deep and lulling tones. The lyrics of the song seem to be about the complication of relationships, of miscommunication. The song begs the question: when nothing is being said, how can anything be heard?

Musically, the song is somewhat hushed and calm but has undertones of frustration and even resignation. It is a song for people who are fed up. The chorus is short and leaves the listener craving more repetition, for it is the part of the song that feels like the rain, like the release. The song does not promise hope, but instead suggests that healing is inevitable. You just have to want it.
