With summer in full swing, we asked our Demo contributors, some Canadian musicians and a variety of U of T students what song they hope will represent their four months of sun. Over the next weeks, we will share what they said.
Olenka (Olenka and the Autumn Lovers)
Song: Lazuli
Artist: Beach House
Album: Bloom
There’s something about Beach House and the summer that seems perfectly attuned, and not just because of the band’s appropriate name. Their music conjures images of diamond seas glittering in the full light of a midday sun. And much like those lazy summer days and the memories they beget, there’s a melancholy that’s born in the moment and lingers for long afterward. “Lazuli” feels like a drive to the beach from out of the depths a muggy city: an escape to a rural, sun-kissed, wave-washed shore, with a transient lover who is on the verge of moving on.
